Cassian Andor Showrunner Exits, Rogue One’s Tony Gilroy Rises To The Occasion

The Cassian Andor Star Wars series is bringing on a familiar showrunner.

Tony Gilroy isn’t exactly a name you think of when you think of Star Wars. He’s a name often associated with thrillers such as the Bourne films or Michael Clayton. Sure, he’s dabbled in science fiction in the past with Armageddon, but you generally don’t think of him as a real contender for big blockbuster showrunner potential. And yet, he’s already proven his worth.

If you’ll recall, Gilroy was brought in to help fix Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That film was in notoriously bad shape before he came in and helped turn it into the film we got. It may not have been perfect, but many would agree it’s at least an entertaining and watchable film. In fact, there are plenty of Star Wars fans who see it as one of the strongest Disney-led Star Wars films to date.

If you are one of those people, then I have some good news for you. According to THR, the series’ original showrunner, Stephen Schiff, has exited his role. Luckily, Gilroy has entered the role. It will likely be a smooth transition too, because Gilroy was also a part of the writing team. Included in that writing team are his brother Dan Gilroy, Beau Willimon, and Schiff.

In addition to showrunning, he will serve as director of the pilot and perhaps one more episode. However, like The Mandalorian before it, the goal with the Cassian Andor series is to bring in a stable of solid directors. It clearly worked out well for that first show, so I don’t see why Disney+ would pull away from that winning strategy.

In other news, the Cassian Andor show has also cast Genevieve O’Reilly and Denise Gough. The former will be reprising her role as the politician Mon Mothma. The character made her debut in Return of the Jedi and was played well by O’Reilly in Rogue One. There are no details, however, on how Mon Mothma will play into the story.
