REVIEW: Harley Quinn S2 E4: Thawing Hearts

This week’s episode of Harley Quinn is titled, Thawing Hearts. Like the name would hint it features Mr. Freeze (Alfred Molina). Since the first episode where Harley (Kaley Cuoco) was frozen in a block of ice, she has wanted revenge. After last week’s successful heist, this week she was finally able to penetrate Freeze’s ice barrier. Also this week, Ivy (Lake Bell) and Kite Man (Matt Oberg) make their engagement official and now venture to secure their ideal wedding venue.

In a nutshell, I would describe this episode to a Harley Quinn twisted version of the classic Batman: The Animated Series episode titled, “Heart of Ice.” Mr. Freeze is not your typical villain. In the animated series as well as here it conveys the idea that if it weren’t for his wife’s rare disease, he wouldn’t be a villain. But the lack of funding as well as a viable cure has slowly turned him… well… cold.

His situation plays right into Harley’s toxic qualities. She has a shoot first ask questions later, which gets her into trouble. In this case, she assumes that Freeze is just another male villain in Gotham that is trying to keep her down. By the time she realizes her mistake, it cost someone their life.

This recurring theme has constantly put her and especially her friends in harm’s way. This week specifically she has to call upon Ivy to save the day. Ivy is forced to put her wedding venue search on hold as she has to try and solve Harley’s problem. With Ivy slowly making her own life with Kite Mate, she is going to need to stary relying on herself more.

In going through this week’s experience, Harley finally gets a crash course in real love. First from Ivy and Kite Man. He has shown so much patience and understanding with Ivy’s loyalty to Harley. He is always there in a heartbeat when Ivy needs him to assist her and Harley with whatever they need. This week he sacrificed his ideal wedding venue because of the situation at Freeze’s lair.

Second from Mr. Freeze and Nora. Nora willingly froze herself so that one day she could once again be with her husband. Mr. Freeze has worked tirelessly to find a cure for his wife’s disease at any cost. Even if it meant turning into a villain. We see in this episode that he is even willing to sacrifice his life so that his wife could live.

In seeing these examples of love, Harley realizes that she never had that kind of relationship with the Joker (Alan Tudyk). While she was blinded by her obsession with the Joker, she never noticed that what he showed to her was never real love. Yet another hard life lesson that she has had to learn.

Also real quick a BIG shoutout to the creative team of the series for including The Condiment King! He is one of my favorite gag villains that we’ve briefly seen in the animated series. He was also mentioned in Lego Batman and the latest series of Titans. Yes, he is completely ridiculous but that is why I love him.

This may end up being my favorite episode of the season because there is a lot of depth to it. Or maybe I am just a sucker for a love story. It will be interesting if Harley’s experience resonates in future episodes.
