Up front, I’m a bit of a fan of the Halo lore. So when I read this report of changes to Halo canon coming in the Halo TV show, I was worried. However, after reading what these alleged changes are, I see no issues.
This story comes from the folks over at The Illuminerdi, who claim to have gotten a hold of the pilot script for the Halo TV series. There are three details they have noticed which deviate from the lore of the Halo games and books they say. I wouldn’t agree with their analysis here, and I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.
Those Plot Points?
First, the outlet claims Master Chief removes his helmet at the end of the opening episode. Sacrilege to some fans, but not me. Halo is moving into TV, that’s a very different medium from video games. In a game, YOU are Master Chief and the old don’t show his face trick, is especially effective in a game environment. The trick is to make the gamer feel like they are Master Chief, not that he is a character they control. But, fans don’t really watch a show or film thinking they are the hero. As a kid, I played at being Indy or Han Solo, but I knew they were characters played by actors. Therefore ripping the metaphorical Band-Aid off quickly at the end of the first episode is a good idea. I was genuinely worried how they could truly tell Chief’s story without showing even his younger face?
The next change the outlet claims is that there are a ton of Spartans. Whereas, in the Halo games, Master Chief is one of the few remaining Spartans left. I often wondered where they would start this TV show in the timeline. To be honest, this simply sounds like the show is beginning before the climactic events of ‘The Fall of Reach’, one of the tent pole Halo novels the franchise is built around. This is both exactly what I expected for the Halo TV show, and what I wanted. So there is no canon problems I can see with this one.

Lastly, the only change the outlet lists I have any issue with is about the character Miranda Keys. Keys in the games is an important character. Miranda Keys is the daughter of Commander Keys, and Doctor Elizabeth Halsey, and Halsey especially is crucial the plot of Halo. The outlet says that Keys is no longer a military officer like the games, but seems to instead be more of a scientist in this iteration of the story.
Now, this is not the worst thing ever, I’m not going to cry about ruining the story here or anything. However, it does seem an odd change, and it’s the only change the outlets report that I feel actually qualifies as a change to the canon. Now, there may be nothing to worry about here. Miranda Keys doesn’t really come into the Halo story until things really kick off. There is no reason to think Miranda couldn’t be working on something else prior to her joining the military? Or this could simply be the project she was assigned at that point in her career?
Ultimately, I have high hopes for the Halo TV show. As for these reported changes to Halo canon coming in the Halo TV Show? Honestly, I see nothing to concern me as a fan.
