Chris Rock To Be First Artist To Perform LIVE on Netflix

Live streaming events are something that most streaming services have taken advantage of. Mostly through sports or partnerships with network channels. The one streaming giant who seemed to be behind on this kind of streaming is the streaming original giant, Netflix. That will soon change with a huge announcement made on Thursday.

Netflix has announced that in early 2023 the legendary comedian, director, and actor Chris Rock will be the first artist to perform live on Netflix. This will be their first-ever live, global streaming event. Additional information including the streaming date will be announced at a later date.

“Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation,” said Robbie Praw, Netflix Vice President of Stand-up and Comedy Formats. “We’re thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history. This will be an unforgettable moment and we’re so honored that Chris is carrying this torch.”

This is just another building block in Netflix’s spotlight on live comedy. Their Netflix is a Joke: Festival was the biggest live, in-person event in Netflix history. This event sold over 260,000 tickets and featured over 330 comedians. They performed 295 shows across 35 venues in Los Angeles. Including the first-ever stand-up show at Dodger Stadium.

Netflix says they are going to continue to invest in scripted comedy for TV and film, stand-up, sketch, comedy formats, and animation. They want to leave no doubt that they are the definitive home for all things comedy.

It will be interesting to see if more comedians are added to these live events in 2023 or if some of their festivals would be also available to stream. This would be yet another way to keep subscribers in a crowded war for attention.

This will be Chris Rock’s second Netflix special. His first title, Chris Rock: Tamborine debuted in 2018.
