Christopher Nolan Rescued Donnie Darko Before Network TV Debut

Filmmaker Richard Kelly has had an interesting time as a filmmaker. The auteur stamped his fingerprint on his debut feature Donnie Darko. Later Kelly followed up the confounding Southland Tales that starred The Rock, Sean William Scott, and Kevin Smith. Originally the film divided audiences but has since found an audience. Recently, Kelly commented on how Donnie Darko had an unlikely savior from a director known for his linear fracturing imaginative tales.

Kelly said The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan’s intervention is how audiences got to enjoy the surreal world inhabited by Frank the Bunny. Donnie Darko was nearly destined to make a debut on your local Starz channel. The film did not leave Sundance unscathed. Despite that, the Batman Begins director was still able to convince Newmarket to put Donnie Darko into theaters.

Had Donnie Darko not made a theatrical debut, would it still have the same impact? Sure, there are many films that are straight to streaming service or network today that are pretty good. Still, Donnie Darko doesn’t seem like a movie that should’ve been relegated to a network premiere back in 2001. Still, I for one am glad Donnie Darko was able to be seen in theaters as I am sure many film-goers who had the privy to catch it during its initial theatrical run.  Donnie Darko seemed like lightning in a bottle at the time it was released. I hope Kelly brings home the thunder during his next production. He’s a director with a unique vision and I hope it crystallizes into a very unique film down the road.
