Cillian Murphy Always Believed Christian Bale Would Be Cast As Batman Over Himself

Though he had a screen test to play Batman before being cast as Scarecrow, Cillian Murphy never considered himself  a contender to wear the cowl.

Before we move on, watch said screen test now, via a special from The Dark Knight Trilogy Blu-Ray. It’s at the very end, but this is a rather good special feature.

That’s not too bad. It’s hard to see Cillian Murphy as Batman, but that’s most likely because we’ve seen Bale play the character for three movies.

In an interview with THR, they told  Cillian Murphy this video proves he was a contender for Christopher Nolan’s Batman. But Murphy doesn’t think so:

Oh no, I don’t believe that, man. I don’t believe I was close to landing that role. The only actor who was right for that part at that time, in my estimation, was Christian Bale, and he absolutely smashed it. So, for me, it was just an experience, and then it turned into something else. It turned into that character, Scarecrow, and it turned into a working relationship with Chris. So I think back very, very fondly on that time, but I never, ever, ever considered myself Bruce Wayne material.

It’s funny that Murphy mentions Bruce Wayne at the end, as he does look pretty convincing as the playboy billionaire. Still, Bale’s Batman voice, love it or hate it, does set him apart in the above special feature.

Maybe, somewhere in the multiverse, there is a version of Earth wear Cillian Murphy played Batman. Maybe.
