City In Michigan Deems Clown Costumes Too Scary

If you were asked to make a list of costumes that would be banned from a community event, the costumes that would come to mind probably would be those that can be considered culturally insensitive, racist or maybe just too revealing. Well in the of Oak Park, Michigan, although the costume has not been banned, the city has warned parents to “use their best judgement” as pertaining to wearing clown costumes.

That’s right, you can still dress up as you favorite movie killer like Freddy Krueger, Jason, Jigsaw and so many others but they draw the line at clowns. The official press release that was posted on their Facebook account reads:
“Over the last few years, many parents gave direct feedback stating they were concerned their children would see clown costumes and relate it to scary movies that are targeted for an adult audience.

That said, the City will not ban people with clown costumes (or any other) from participating in the Boo Bash event, however, we are encouraging parents to use their best judgement given this is an event that caters to families and small children.”

If you think about some of the other costumes that could be in question, the idea of clowns being targeted is ridiculous, especially for a Halloween event. I wonder if by releasing this press release they may have accidentally opened the door to a bunch of people showing up dressed up as clowns. This should have been thought through better by that city’s administration.

The fear of clowns or coulrophobia has recently been a more popular topic the last few years, especially when certain individuals started popping up around the world in random places dressed up as clowns to frighten people. Leading to Hollywood to take notice and capitalize on the fear of clowns. For example, there was the fourth season of American Horror Story: Freak Show that featured Twisty the Clown, or last years hit horror film It featuring Pennywise the Dancing Clown, who will be back in theaters in September of next year.

Although this isn’t really news, it is a funny story about a community that unfortunately is in the news for the wrong reasons. Hopefully their event goes well without too many outsiders showing up dresses as clowns.

What would you think if this happened in your community? Let us know in the comment section below!
