Cobra Kai Is Moving To Netflix

Cobra Kai is headed to Netflix.

The martial arts drama, The Karate Kid debuted exactly 36 years ago today. Is starred Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita, and Elisabeth Shue. The story follows Daniel LaRusso who is taught martial arts by Mr. Miyagi as he gears up for a tournament that features his bullies. The film had several sequels and a reboot with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan in 2010.

In 2018 we saw the return of some of beloved Karate Kid characters in the YouTube series Cobra Kai. This series takes place 30 years after the events of the first film. It finds LaRusso a successful man but struggling to find balance without Mr. Miyagi. While his adversary Johnny Lawrence, played by William Zabka, is down and out but looking for redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate Dojo.

Today Netflix announced that their streaming service would be the new home for Cobra Kai. This not only includes the first two seasons but an all-new third. The first season was very successful with both critics and viewers alike. It was named 2018’s Best Drama by Rotten Tomatoes and earned a 100% Fresh rating. It also had two Emmy nominations.

Cobra Kai is written and executive produced by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg. This is via their production company, Counterbalance Entertainment. James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett executive produce for Overbrook Entertainment. Along with Susan Ekins in association with Sony Pictures Television, with Macchio and Zabka serving as co-executive producers.

This comes as no surprise as it seems right up Netflix’s alley. With classic reboots like Fuller House, this series is going to fit right in. It also makes sense for the series to want to move to a bigger platform as it will allow for a broader audience. A lot of people weren’t looking to subscribe to the premium YouTube service as it didn’t have too much worth watching. With so much competition, it’s not on most people’s radar. I am very excited that more people get to watch this as it is an amazing series that can bring together 2 generations of fans of the franchise.
