The Mighty Ducks Disney+ Series Synopsis Has Shades Of Cobra Kai

We all know the story of The Mighty Ducks. It’s not only a typical underdog sports story about a group of ragtag misfits but the story of a man who rediscovers his love for a sport. Even in the sequels, where the Ducks were recognized as a solid hockey team, they managed to paint them as underdogs. But, no matter what, the Ducks were the good guys of this whole thing. One would think this tried-and-true recipe would be repeated for the new Disney+ series.

Apparently not. In the past, we’ve seen some rumored synopses for the show, and it seemed to point in a different direction. Instead of the standard “Ducks as underdogs” approach, they would be going a sort of Cobra Kai approach. This is an approach where the main characters aren’t a part of the main organization, but instead a rival one.

We saw something similar in Cobra Kai, where the main characters were a part of the dojo that was previously the villains. Now, with this new official synopsis, we see the Ducks as potential antagonists in the story. Here’s what Disney+ has as the Mighty Ducks synopsis:

RELATED – RUMOR: Emilio Esteves Returning As Coach Bombay In Mighty Ducks Disney+ Series?

“In present day Minnesota, the Mighty Ducks have evolved from scrappy underdogs to an ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team. After 12-year-old Evan (Noon) is unceremoniously cut from the Ducks, he and his mom Alex (Graham) set out to build their own ragtag team of misfits to challenge the cutthroat, win-at-all-costs culture of competitive youth sports.”

Personally, I really like this approach. It manages to take what we love about the original and flip it on its head. It’s able to bring that nostalgia all while bringing something just a little bit new to the table. The big question here is just how Gordon Bombay will be brought into the story.

From what we hear, Emilio Estevez’s character will be a regular. Will he be coach of the Ducks, and will part of his arc have to do with filing down some of that unhealthy competitive edge? Who knows! But it’ll be interesting to watch, that’s for sure.
