Comic Icon Todd McFarlane Wants His Spawn Film To Scare Children

Comic book legend Todd McFarlane is not shying away from how he wants his comic book creation to be intrepreted on the big screen. McFarlane, who is writing, producing and directing Spawn, with Jamie Foxx playing the title role and Jeremy Renner costaring, is dead set on this comic book film not being compared to the heroes that grace the cinematic universes of Marvel and DC. Recently in an interview with IGN, McFarlane had plenty to say about his crown jewel:

“If you think about it as a horror [film] it makes complete sense. if you think about it as Captain America it falls apart. Here’s what I’m trying to get Hollywood to understand because they still don’t quite get it is I want to do a dead serious, scary movie that happens to be a superhero, right? And so they keep tripping into this superhero part and I wish I could almost take that piece out of it.”

“But I just saw earlier today, Greg Nicotero showed me some physical pieces of the costume and I’m going, ‘That’s it.’ We’ve been designing it anyways but I finally got to see it physically and I go, ‘That’s it.’ So next time I go into the studios, I’m bringing all that stuff with me because, obviously, I didn’t do a good enough job in the script to convey that. They’re reading words in my script that are way different than what I see in my head and I just want to scare people. I just want to scare people on a serious level.”

If there is any comic book character who deserves to be given the terrifying, horror treatment, it is Spawn. To stay true to the character’s history and legacy, creating a frightening story arch that doesn’t feature the protagonist following the same rules as Captain America or Superman is the exact method that should be used in bringing Spawn to life. Here’s hoping the studio understands the vision of McFarlane and allows him to fully develop his creation for the big screen.
