Contagion Is One Of This Past Week’s Most Streamed Movies — Gee, I Wonder Why

Out of nowhere, the mostly-forgotten, nearly 10-year-old film Contagion is exploding back on the scene.

By and large, it’s easy to figure out what will be some of the most-streamed movies out there. A lot of them are new, and a lot of them are classics. That generally seems to be the pattern with these things. Every so often, though, you get an outlier that stands out more as an indication of the times and less of an indication of the film itself.

Such is the case with this past week. According to Reelgood, a service that brings all streaming platforms together into one place, there was one interesting film that burst its way into the top 10 out of nowhere. Based on the 45,000 users of the service, the 2011 film Contagion has scratched and clawed its way to the number eight spot across all platforms from February 27 to through March 4. These platforms include all streaming subscription services, all ad-supported services, all renting and buying services, and TV Everywhere services.

The interesting takeaway here is that one week prior, Contagion wasn’t even in the top 100 watched movies until this week. For those who don’t know, it’s a 2011 Steven Soderbergh thriller starring Matt Damon. As the title indicates, it follows the spreading of a virus that leads to a global pandemic.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand why this movie has made its way to the top 10. With COVID-19 rapidly making its way around the world, people tend to flock to related media. Whether it’s to learn about pandemics, to fuel their fear, or to just be entertained by something mildly relevant, we can’t say. That being said, I’m curious to see if it’ll manage to reach even higher in the weeks to come as the virus gains more traction.
