Subscribers Use Netflix Significantly More Than Disney+, Reelgood Data Shows

There’s no doubt about the fact that Disney+ has been a huge success. In the first few months of its release, it managed to take in a hefty 28.6 million. Of course, this has led to one big question: is Netflix in trouble? As all the big studios have pulled their content from the streaming giant, it did seem as though many subscribers were readying to pull from them. But do we live in a world where Netflix has to scramble to gain loyal subscribers?

Not really. You only need to speak anecdotally to those who subscribe to both Disney+ and Netflix to know that usage of Disney+ is significantly lower than its larger counterpart. But do we actually have any data on it. The streaming search engine Reelgood has the numbers!

They have collected data from the streaming activity of 45,000 of its Reelgood users in the U.S. subscribed to both Disney+ and Netflix, and the findings are…actually fairly predictable. According to them, users utilize Disney+ roughly one-fourth the amount of time they utilize Netflix. For the below charts, 100% is the sum of all Netflix and Disney+ streams — not including other subscriptions in the equation — over a given period of time.

In the next graph, you can see the rough compared usage over the months since Disney+ started streaming into our living rooms.

Following the end of The Mandalorian on December 26, you can see an immediate drop of usage. This indicates that apart from that series, users aren’t finding a lot to keep their attention. For now, this seems to tell us that Netflix is safe for the time being. They may not have as many big names, but it does seem as though users are starting to appreciate the sheer quantity of content it offers.

At the end of the day, it seems as though Netflix’s shotgun approach has helped keep it more than competitive against the House of Mouse. Now the big question is whether or not it can be sustained as Disney+ builds up its library with original big-name content.
