Could San Diego Comic-Con Be Canceled In 2021?

It’s pretty much a given at this point that most major conventions this year aren’t going to happen. Sure, some may be pushed to near the end of the year, but the big ones, like San Diego Comic-Con, are all but gone from the public eye. I know in terms of our planning, the con circuit is pretty much dead. And that makes sense. We don’t quite know what the trajectory of the pandemic will be, so it’s much easier to cancel.

But what about next year? Most of us assume that COVID-19 will have run its course by the end of this year…but could it still affect events in 2021? That appears like it may be the case — at least in the case of California. According to AP reporter Kathleen Ronayne, California governor Gavin Newsom had some bad comments for those hoping to attend large-scale events next year.

“The prospect of mass gatherings is negligible at best until we get to herd immunity and we get to a vaccine. Large scale events that bring in hundreds, thousand, tens of thousands of strangers..is not in the cards,” Newsom said.

So, Newsom doesn’t see large events as a possibility until we get a vaccine. According to National Institute of Health’s Kizzmekia Corbett, we will likely be getting that at some point in the spring. What does that mean? It means that events in 2021 could not be in the cards, including the likes of WonderCon and San Diego Comic-Con.

Of course, we’re currently in uncharted waters with this whole pandemic thing as it is. As such, there really is no point in trying to predict the way things will turn out down the line. But, as it stands, it looks like we may have a couple of years of slow con seasons.
