While plenty of anime have incredibly universal stories, there’s no doubt that many shows have their unique quirks. They can be the most serious shows in the world, and oftentimes there will still be a twinge of strangeness that seems to be at odds with the style of the rest of the series. But, you know what? That’s kind of the appeal. You don’t need to have your show be one single tone throughout the entire thing.
I think that perfectly describes Cowboy Bebop. Yes, it has its badass, grimy, lived-in vibe. It has its suave, Danny Ocean vibe. And, of course, it has its odder moments, including the entirety of the character Ed.

So, how can they adapt this for the live-action series? Star John Cho was recently asked about it, and here’s what he had to say.
“[The anime series is] such a unique piece of material. It’s got such a unique vibe. So many disparate elements coming together into a single project. It’s so weird. I think that was the biggest thing that I was focusing on all the time, is that we gotta keep it strange. And that’s hard to do, but I watched some of the stuff, and I’m really happy with it.”
Sadly, it’ll be a good while until we see any of what Netflix has to offer. Not long after production began, Cho was injured, leading to a months-long delay. Based on his appearance to promote The Grudge, though, it does seem like he’s recovering well.
What do you think of Cho’s comments? Do you think he understands the original series well? Let us know your thoughts down below!
