We here at LRM Online canNOT seem to stop talking about impending video game adaptations. Given how strong comic book movies have become, we’re honestly just waiting for that one mega-hit to change the tide — though comparing video games to comic books is seriously apples and oranges. However, one video game that never seemed to get mentioned in the conversation of adaptations is a relatively recent one: Cuphead.
For those who don’t know, Cuphead is a recent run-and-gun shooter in the vein of Contra and Metal Slug. However, where it truly shines is in its unique visual style. Rather than go with a more traditional pixel-looking style, its art is inspired by the “rubber hose” animation style of the 1930s.

With this in mind, it seems like a perfect candidate for an animated adaptation…and it looks like that’s exactly what we’re getting! According to THR, Netflix is teaming with King Features Syndicate and the indie game studio Studio MHR to bring us The Cuphead Show, a “new animated comedy will expand upon the characters and world of the game, which centers on titular hero Cuphead and his brother Mugman who make a deal with the devil in a high-stakes gambling match.” Certainly sounds like it retains the spirit of the source material, that’s for sure!
Executive producing will the video game’s creators Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, along with Carmen Sandiego’s C.J. Kettler (and if you haven’t seen the recent Netflix take on Carmen Sandiego, I highly recommend it). Perhaps with this, and the continued success of Castlevania, we will finally realize that animation is the perfect medium for video game adaptations. Maybe.
