Damian Lillard Is Leading the Monstars! But Who Should Fill Out The Lineup? | Fine Toon

Space Jam 2 has been long in the making with rumors swirling since 2014 about LeBron James taking over the starring role furthering his quest to dethrone MJ as the best basketball player of all time. This recently we’ve received news about casting and that the project would be helmed by Malcolm D. Lee after the original director, Terence Nance, left due to creative differences with the “studio/producers”. While it doesn’t say which producer it wouldn’t be a far leap to believe James has a large presence in decisions and could be the catalyst over the recent director change.

This seems a little obvious with the cast including other players represented by James’s agent Rich Paul, such as the newly golden clad, Anthony Davis. It was also revealed by Shams Charania, a leading reporter inside the NBA community, that Damian Lillard, Klay Thompson, Diana Taurasi, and Nneka Ogwumike among others will appear in the movie in some fashion with Lillard taking a prominent role in the film. With this latest news regarding the follow up to a childhood favorite I thought it’d be fun to create a lineup for the Monstars, assuming they decide to keep that team name, versus the Looney Tunes squad. While some of the names listed on the tweet are in the movie most are not likely on the villain side. Remember this is just a fun list but Lillard is likely on the other team given the distinction in Shams tweet.

1. Damian Lillard PG (Portland Trail Blazers)

This wouldn’t have been my first choice of the player to play Nawt though it is a very fitting choice for the role. While it hasn’t been officially announced that Lillard will be playing this role the specification that his role will be prominent leads me to believe he will be passing the rock for the bad guys. Lillard moving into the film industry is not surprising as he is a known rapper even breaking into chart positions for his first album, The Letter O. Lillard is a better player than Bogues so Nawt will get a serious upgrade in the Space Jam sequel.

2. Diana Taurasi SG/PG (Phoenix Mercury)

Now some might question this call as most would expect the Monstars to choose an all male cast like the first Space Jam film. However, some diversity on this front would be a welcome change of pace and give the WNBA some much needed spotlight. Taurasi arguably one of the best WNBA players in the history of the league has been affiliated with James since the 2008 season wearing specially designed Zoom LeBron sneakers making her appearance in the film the least bit surprising. Now the major question is whether her appearance will be in the role of a cameo or the correct choice as Bupkus.

3. Kevin Love PF/C (Cleveland Cavaliers)

Is Kevin Love out of position? Yes.  Does the cast seem to be all on the West Coast? Yes. But imagine Kevin Love facing LeBron on the Monstars. I know who the city of Cleveland would be rooting for and it’s not the side with a talking rabbit. Love would give Pound, originally portrayed by Charles Barkley, a similar skill set though let’s hope Swackhammer doesn’t expect the same percentage of steals per game or else they picked the wrong guy this time around. The upgrade of 3 point percentage would also likely allow Pound to switch out to the wing.

4. Draymond Green PF (Golden State Warriors)

Green is going to show up in Space Jam 2 even though it hasn’t been announced yet. The Warriors will not just be represented by Thompson given how popular the team has become during their dynasty era and Green has Paul as an agent so the announcement of Green is inevitable. So if Green is showing up how can anyone but Green play the role of Bang? Bang is extremely physical and one of the most violent players squashing and mashing the Looney Tunes squad. This matches the playing style of Green perfectly as he literally kicked another player between the legs on the court.

5. Boban Marjanović C (Dallas Mavericks)

If you’ve seen John Wick 3 you are very well familiar with the 7’3″ Serbian who has taken his talents from the court to the screen. Seeing Boban in another film would not be surprising and with Space Jam 2, a film that ties in basketball, it seems like the perfect fit. The only concern with him playing Blanko is that his play style is a more of a bruiser than Bradley meaning that the blue lug would likely have to hit the gym or at least drink some of Michael’s secret stuff. Outside from play the stats are relatively the same making the casting seem almost perfect.

Let us know your thoughts. Who do you think should round out the Monstars lineup?
