Danny Boyle Sour On Franchise Films After Bond Issue

Not too long ago, James Bond fans seemed to be in for a real treat. They were within spitting distance of seeing the great Danny Boyle take on the 25th film in the franchise. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be, and he ended up splitting from the project due to creative differences. While the split itself seemed amicable, Boyle doesn’t seem keen to return to another big series at any point in the future.

“I learned my lesson that I am not cut out [for franchises] otherwise you’re digging in the same hole,” Boyle confessed to Metro. “I am better not quite in the mainstream franchise movies, is the honest answer. I learned quite a lot about myself with Bond. I work in partnership with writers and I am not prepared to break it up. We were working very, very well but they didn’t want to go down that route with us.”

“What John [Hodge] and I were doing, I thought, was really good,” Boyle continued. “It wasn’t finished, but it could have been really good. You have to believe in your process and part of that is the partnership I have with a writer. It is like someone coming and saying, ‘Hey, we are going to give you a different editor.’ Those fundamental partnerships are vital.”

At the end of the day, I think it’s important to say there is no right or wrong way to tell stories. It all depends on what works for the individual artists, and in at least this case, it looks like he’s learned something valuable about himself.
