Here’s my review of Daredevil: Born Again S2E04, it’s called Gloves Off and it does feel like finally the gloves have come off with this reboot. This was my favourite episode of Born Again so far and would rank among one of the best of the original Daredevil series also.

Folks, this is a Spoiler Free review, so I will be staying away from exactly why causes some of the drama in this one.

Gloves Off

Appropriately titled, because it felt finally this week like Daredevil has embraced it’s comic roots and made it work with the gritty realistic style of the previous shows. This is a bit of a climax to some of the sub-storylines that have been set up this season. Fisk’s Boxing Match is set to take place and after coming back into the show in Episode 3, we get a lot of Bullseye.

If you like Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye, you’ll love this episode. Bullseye really gets to shine here and it feels like we are closer and closer to the comic book villain. Some viewers may find it hard to suspend disbelief that Bullseye can turn anything into a weapon, sometimes against foes with guns. I would say, why are you watching Daredevil about a blind man that can defeat even Bullseye? It’s Marvel, suspend disbelief and enjoy. That’s exactly what I did.

Some notable scuffles involving Bullseye and our hero were highlights of the episode. Though to be fair, any time Bethel is on screen you know something is going to go down. Matt is never ‘Matt’ in this episode, we never see him out the mask at all. He is Daredevil from start to end and I kinda liked that as well this week. There’s an urgency and a pace to how the events unfold as we get closer to the boxing match with Fisk.

There’s no spoilers here, but I will say this is a bit of a game changer for where the rest of this season goes. ‘Gloves Off’ is one of those episodes which shifts the direction of many characters arcs. There will be ramifications following these events as we head closer to the series climax itself. Lines are being drawn and sides taken.

In all truth, if you like Daredevil, this episode is peak and if you also love Fisk and Bullseye, you are in for an even bigger treat this week. Without a doubt the best episode of the show so far. It was fun, exciting, dramatic and a true game changer for the rest of the season.

Tune in, turn down the lights, turn up the sound and have 50 odd minutes of fun.

GRADE: A+

Brilliant episode, dramatic and pacey, with some great action scenes which really embrace the comic book roots of these characters. Making for in my opinion the best episode, yet, of Born Again across either season.
