The end of the X-Men franchise is here. It’s been a long 19 or so years that we’ve gone on this journey with these characters. We’ve seen them at the beginning. We’ve seen them grow, age, die, and then we saw them again, looping back in time to an earlier decade, where we started all over again. And now we’ve come full circle with Dark Phoenix. It’s almost fitting that this be the last Marvel movie Fox puts out that was made without Disney’s eventual say-so.
But it’s not exactly breaking down the barriers in terms of expectations. Critics have had their say, and most don’t seem to be enthused, with it clocking in at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. As of this writing, it is the worst-reviewed film in the franchise, so the expectations aren’t exactly high for the film at the box office.

According to Deadline, the film took in $5 million in Thursday preview numbers. This is short of the figure Godzilla: King of the Monsters had last week, which resulted in $47.7 million. With that in mind, I can’t see this one hitting its $50 to $50 million projections for the whole weekend. Furthermore, this Thursday is down from the $8.2 million and $8.1 million the last two X-Men movies made in their Thursdays.
So, yeah, it’s not off to a good start. But how far will it fall? That’s the major question. We don’t quite have a grasp of what fans think just yet. Its CinemaScore won’t be revealed, but as of now, its Verified Audience Rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 64%, based on 815 reviews. So maybe this will be another case where the general public is more forgiving than critics, but it’s still early on.
