Poor 20th Century Fox didn’t exactly close out their X-Men universe with a bang. Sure, they had the likes of Logan and Deadpool to help keep things afloat, but between X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, there was a lot to be desired in terms of quality. It also took the wind out of the sales in terms of overall fan enthusiasm. And let’s not forget there’s still that one movie that has yet to come out: The New Mutants.
Yeah, this is one movie that seems like it’s cursed. It was originally supposed to come out nearly two years ago. However, for one reason or another, it was delayed and rumored to be undergoing reshoots — reshoots that never happened. Under Disney’s watch, it was later slated for release this April. However, with the coronavirus pandemic taking hold, it’s once again been pushed.
However, before that delay, one could only imagine that there was some pressure to close out the 20th Century Fox movies with a bang, right? Not really.

“Look, you can only go up after Dark Phoenix,” The New Mutants director Josh Boone told Empire. “That’s not to say anything bad about the people involved, but it was what it was. Honestly, I feel less pressure now than I did ahead of [the first slated release date]. Because we’ve tested our movie so many times, and audiences have loved it.”
You know what? I can’t blame him for his comments, in all honesty. At the end of the day, Dark Phoenix opened to 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest rated X-Men film to date. And that certainly didn’t help its box office prospects. It made only $252.4 million, definitely not enough to cover its $200 million plus marketing.
Given that The New Mutants likely has a much smaller budget, there’s no way it can lose as much as Dark Phoenix. Well, at least that’s the case with a theatrical release. With the movie delayed once again, I can almost see Disney opting to release it on Hulu some time in the near future.
