Dark Phoenix: Jennifer Lawrence Wouldn’t Star In The Film Without Kinberg Directing

Here’s some news regarding the upcoming Dark Phoenix. The film’s director Simon Kinberg recently set down with THR to discuss the feature. One thing is clear. Kinberg has cultivated the trust of his cast. Specifically, one Ms. Jennifer Lawrence. In a recent interview with THR, Kinberg was asked whether or not there were drafts of the script without certain key characters — just in case some stars wouldn’t return.

“We presumed the First Class core cast — Fassbender, McAvoy Jennifer and Nic [Hoult] were coming back for this film,” Kinberg told the outlet. “Part of the reason I presumed that was at the end of finishing X-Men: Apocalypse, when it was clear Bryan Singer was not going to direct the next movie, it was the actors that approached me about directing the next of the X-Men movies. Jennifer especially. Jen said she wouldn’t come back for another movie unless I directed it. So, I had a lot of support from them.”

Being that Dark Phoenix is the follow up to the imbalanced 2016 X-Men Apocalypse, Lawrence’s quote has a dual meaning. By the time X-Men Apocalypse released several accusers had come forward with allegations of sexual abuse against director Bryan Singer. The director helmed a total of five of the X-Men series eight films.

Now Kinberg is no newbie to the X-Men franchise, but this is his first time in the directors’ chair. Kinsberg has written four of the eight X-Men films and served as producer on X-Men Days of Future Past, X-Men First Class, X-Men Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix. In addition, Kinberg has produced Deadpool 1 and its sequel, Logan, and New Mutants.

Kinberg certainly has more than a few notches on the belt when it comes to superhero movies. I think it’ll be interesting to watch this iteration of X-Men’s swan song. X-Men Apocalypse was the last time this crop of actors had an outing. That film left a lot to be desired. It wasted an opportunity to showcase an amazing villain in the form of Oscar Isaacs’ Apocalypse. I sure hope Sophie Turner brings the heat to the role of Phoenix.
