Dark Phoenix Projected To Hit $50-$55M In Opening Weekend

The verdict seems to be out in terms of the critics for Dark Phoenix. As of this writing, it is sitting at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 99 reviews being counted. It’s not as bad as it was earlier this morning, but this doesn’t look like it’s the movie Fox was hoping to end one of their tentpole franchises on. But, of course, critical reception isn’t the only thing that matters. The almighty dollar is the true ruler in Hollywood.

So how much can this film truly make once it actually hits theaters? I mean, it’s not looking amazing. According to Deadline, Dark Phoenix is eyeing a $50 to $55 million opening weekend. This would be a significant step down from the $65.7 million X-Men: Apocalypse made back in 2016, and even THAT performance was substantially lower from the $90 million or so X-Men: Days of Future Past a few years before that.

That being said, the franchise has done worse. The original film did $54.4 million (though I guess that’s not a great comparison, since that was 20 years ago) and X-Men: First Class only took in $55.1 million (and that one came on the heels of two X-Men duds, so it’s understandable why fans were skeptical).

All in all, it seems that between the lackluster X-Men: Apocalypse, overall franchise fatigue, and the fact that fans are already looking to the MCU for when the X-Men will be showing up, it’s no huge surprise we could be looking at a series low.
