Hugh Jackman Was Almost Fired From First X-Men Film

I can hardly remember a Hollywood without the Hugh Jackman being around. It was nearly 20 years ago that the Australian actor exploded onto the big screen as Wolverine in the first X-Men film. Not only did that movie help usher in an increased number of superhero films, but it launched Jackman’s career and started him on the path to become one of the big names in the industry we know him to be today.

But, of course, as seems to always be the case, his position in X-Men wasn’t always incredibly secure. Speaking with Daily Mail, Jackman reflected on a much quainter time — a time when he felt like he was one bad comment away from getting canned.

“I was told that things weren’t really working out as they hoped. I was about to get fired from my first Hollywood movie – the biggest of my career. I was angry, I went home to my wife and I complained. I was whinging an Olympic level of whinging to Deb, my wife, and moaning about this person and that person. She listened to me very patiently for about an hour and finally, she just said, ‘Listen, I think you have just got to trust yourself. You are worrying way too much about what everything else is thinking. Just go back to the character, focus on that, trust your instinct… you’ve got this.'”

Unfortunately, Jackman didn’t actually dive into the reasons why the studio didn’t think things were working out. Was it something in his performance that he ended up changing, or was it that they just didn’t get what he was doing with the character (kind of like with Johnny Depp’s performance in the first Pirates movie).

What do you think of Jackman’s comments? Any idea what the studio could have hated so much? Let us know your thoughts down below!
