Dark Phoenix To Have Stan Lee Tribute Instead Of Cameo

It’s been a tried and true tradition for filmmakers to put the one and only Stan Lee in their movies. Given just how big of a fingerprint he left on the comics industry — and by extension the film industry — it served as a nod to knowing fans, and has since gone on to be an expected part of each Marvel experience. Of course, with Stan Lee having passed away, it was only a matter of time before those cameos would come to a halt. But what about 20th Century Fox’s new X-Men film, Dark Phoenix?

“We don’t have a cameo,” Dark Phoenix Director Simon Kinberg revealed to Cinema Blend. “I’d rather say that than then keep it mysterious, out of respect for Stan. We do have some tribute to him, and it’s something that obviously we weren’t thinking about when we were making the movie because he was still very much alive. And he’s been such a huge part of making these films over the years. He’s had cameos; he’s had input into the process of making them.”

It is a bit of a bummer that he couldn’t be included in Dark Phoenix. Given that the first X-Men movie featured Lee’s first cameo, it would have been fitting for him to pop in one final time as the franchise comes to a close. That being said, a tribute of sorts is still a good way to go — and they weren’t alone. As you’ll recall, this year’s Captain Marvel, in addition to having a cameo, had the Marvel Studios logo reworked to include Stan Lee in all his various cameos throughout the year.
