Dark Phoenix’s Original Ending Was Apparently Similar To Civil War’s Ending

Dark Phoenix has pretty publicly gone through rounds of reshoots. While the reshoots weren’t nearly as extensive as they were originally rumored to be, director Simon Kinberg and co. did need to make some extensive changes to the final act. In previous interviews, James McAvoy had stated that the changes were essentially made to keep it from echoing another recent movie that had been released, but he didn’t specify which one.

Given that this year’s Captain Marvel saw another powerful female character get imbued with otherworldly power, and that some sort of space battle was mentioned in the original third act of Dark Phoenix, many of us thought this was the movie they were trying to avoid replicating. However, speaking with io9, director Simon Kinberg revealed that Captain Marvel wasn’t the film, and that reshoots had happened before that movie had even come out.

So which movie was it?

“My original ending didn’t have the entire X-Family together the way they are in the film now. More than Captain Marvel, you could see a lot of Civil War in that ending. Usually, these big, huge action movies have the climactic moment in the third act. I loved the way that Civil War had its big action action set piece where everyone’s facing off more towards the end of the second act rather than in the third, so that after that huge battle, you’re left with Winter Soldier, Captain America, and Iron Man.

“It’s this telescoped down view of their raw emotions, and I loved how intimate that was. That’s what I was going for with Dark Phoenix’s ending even though it then might have looked like Captain Marvel for about two minutes.”

This makes me wonder why in the world he changed it. I agree, that ending for Civil War is really something that helped distinguish it from most other superhero movies, which save their big battles for the third act. Was it ultimately studio pressure that forced him to change it so that it fell more in line with a traditional superhero film?

I can’t help but wonder…
