Darren Aronofsky has been in the news a lot lately. His latest movie Mother! Is causing quite the stir with movie goers. The experimental horror film has many viewers confused on how to feel about it. Aronofsky recently spoke with CinePOP and while the director was there promoting Mother!, the conversation did slide into some superhero talk, and Aronofsky said that as far as that genre is concerned, he would like to some day have his own take on Superman.
“A Superman would always be interesting but they’re already deep into reinventing him so that’s now going to happen for a long time.”
With DC’s new banner that is supposed to have different, sort of alternate one off takes on their characters, perhaps Aronofsky could make his Superman film sooner than he thinks. Not sure exactly how DC plans to craft this new universe of stand alones with their current DC extended universe but it seems like there is an opportunity for Aronofsky to step in. Even if it isn’t with Superman, I think DC is a place where Aronofsky would have more freedom as opposed to Marvel.
I am a fan of several of some Aronofsky’s films and would be very interested to see his take on the superhero genre. He was very close to directing The Wolverine but ended up not taking on the project due to personal reasons. Aronofsky certainly does have his own style about him, while some may call it weird, some call it brilliant. With films such as Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, The Fighter and Pi under his belt, the thought of him play around in a superhero world is very tempting. I think it is safe to say it would a superhero movie unlike no other we have seen.
