Darth Vader Versus Kenobi: Why Is Hayden Christensen Playing Vader Again?

Darth Vader Versus Kenobi

Darth Vader Versus Kenobi

There is no doubt that the Prequel Trilogy has received a lot of love recently. It seems that Disney’s lack of planning for the Sequel Trilogy brought out some weird, strange feelings for the PT. Some people think it’s because of The Clone Wars that interest in the objectively (and admittedly) poorly written PT. Whatever the reason, it seems we’ll be getting Darth Vader versus Kenobi… again.

You’re Gonna Hate Me, But Read It All:

During the Disney Investor Day presentation, Kathleen Kennedy stated that “This will be the rematch of the century.” With those words, I lost almost all interest in the show. The one thing I want is to see the Star Wars Universe do is GROW! You can’t grow when you keep bringing back the past. There is a way to world build with the past while having new characters, locations, and stories. The Mandalorian is proving that, but are we really going to see them fight again? Doesn’t that take away from Revenge of the Sith and  A New Hope?

On the note of the PT, I hope many of you realize that the hate for those films in 1999-205 was as strong, if not stronger for The Phantom Menace, as the hate for the Sequel Trilogy… especially The Last Jedi. We never got a good story that really showed how close Obi-Wan and Anakin were. They’re mostly separated in Attack of the Clones and then we get the flashy dancing Darth Vader Vs. Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith. That’s right, I hated the Darth Vader versus Kenobi fight in Episode III. There are legitimately moments where they spin their lightsabers around and around for absolutely NO REASON. It’s not a duel, it’s EDM dancing.

There’s A Chance This Could Work:

It is possible that Disney is able to make this work. They’ve managed to tell a great story in Season 2 of The Mandalorian while setting up spin-offs and bringing back characters from the PT era. It’s always a chance that what I wanted, a story focused on Kenobi with no connections to Luke or Vader, will pale in comparison to what we get. However, WHY IS HE PLAYING VADER? Christensen didn’t voice his character in The Clone Wars, is six inches shorter than the late David Prowse (the OG in-suit Vader), and is supposedly 10 years into life in the suit. None of that screams, let’s get the wooden actor from the PT back. So why?

Business. It makes great business sense to bring him back. People are eating up nostalgia in disgustingly huge amounts (all while complaining that there’s nothing new anymore), but they (fans) really have been waiting for Obi-Wan Kenobi to get another chance at greatness. I must admit that I have wanted to see Ewan McGregor as OWK with a good script too. People are dying to see Darth Vader Versus Kenobi again, but we may get more flashbacks than anything. Considering the miracle done with making Boba Fett ACTUALLY cool in The Mandalorian, there’s a chance this could work though. We may actually see a good version of Christensen on screen.

Final Thoughts:

Boba Fett was loved for looking cool, despite his death being the comic relief in Return of the Jedi. However, now he’s earned the admiration of his fans via The Mandalorian. With a good script and good story, Vader could work in this show. I still think an old, never-before-seen, Jedi coming to Kenobi for help and an off-world adventure would be so much better than trying to make up for the crappy PT. That’s what TCW and Rebels were for, right? I guess the biggest win would be a REAL duel between Vader and Kenobi. One where they do more than spin around and dance for no freaking reason. You can actually check out Brian (PulpMythosLRMornings) and I rank all of the main Skywalker Saga duels Here:

Here’s a sneak peek at my ranking:

9: Obi-Wan v Vader (Episode IV) 8: Anakin/Obi-Wan/Yoda v Dooku (Episode II) 7: Obi-Wan v Anakin (Episode III) 6: Rey v Kylo (Episode VII)

By the way, did you hear that Yoda will be in some of The High Republic material? That’s another dumb idea I will discuss another day. Star Wars needs to go 1,000 years into the past or future and get away from Skywalkers and Solos. Alright, I am done.

Are you happy Christensen is back as Vader? How do you think he’ll be used? Let us know in the comments below!
