Darth Vader’s Return Was A Surprise Says Hayden Christensen

Inside the Mind Of Darth Vader - Hayden Christensen Gives Some Insight

Darth Vader’s return was a surprise says Hayden Christensen in a recent interview with HeyUGuys. Vader’s return came in the closing moments of Episode 2 of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Fans though, are expecting to see a lot more of Vader in Episode 3, released today. So far I have only had time to watch the first half of Episode 3, and I will write my review once I catch the rest later. Maybe slight spoilers to talk about anything from that episode here, but I will say, we do get to see more of Darth Vader. Given all the rumors, we have shared from various sources, we know Vader has a large role in the show from this point on. Though I certainly won’t be getting into the details here.

A Surprise To Be Sure, But A Welcome One

If you had asked me a few years ago, would we ever see Christensen as Vader again on screen, I’d have likely said no. There seemed little opportunity or reason to have Hayden back in the suit. Yet, here we are. It was a bit of a surprise for Christensen also.

“It was definitely a surprise. You know, for the longest time, no, I didn’t think I’d be stepping back into this role again,” the Darth Vader actor told HeyUGuys “But certainly, in the back of my head for a little bit, I was maybe hopeful that one day such an opportunity might present itself.”

“This whole project was a surprisingly emotional experience,” Christensen continued. “This is a character that means so much to me, and to other people as well. This is a character that has resonated in our popular culture in a very unique way, so getting to continue my journey with Darth Vader has been so cool.”

Hayden Christensen has previously said he would be open to reprising the role again in another project. You can’t find the detail of that in the related article below.

As I said already in that piece above, I’m not really sure what opportunities could present themselves that would see Christensen’s return. There may be many years of Vader’s period between trilogies. However given all the comics, novels, games and other media that have portrayed Vader during this period it doesn’t leave a lot of room. That’s not even looking into the fact that to have a show with Vader in this period doesn’t really require Christensen’s presence. The only reason for the actor to appear would be in scenes where Vader’s helmet is removed. If you pull on that string too often, it becomes a little silly. Therefore, whilst Vader’s return is one I could happily wish for, I’m not sure where Hayden would fit in to that?

There are rumors, from trades, that Christensen will also reprise his role within Ahsoka. Ahsoka is another show where flashbacks to Anakin Skywalker would be possible. There’s also the possibility given the time period of Anakin appearing as a Force Ghost to Ahsoka, which absolutely would require Christensen to film. Of course, we have no idea what context Hayden could appear in Ahsoka, so for now, it’s purely speculation.

Hayden Christensen says Darth Vader’s return was a surprise. So far, are you happy to have Vader back on screen and Christensen’s face behind the mask? Would you be up for a Darth Vader series exploring the Sith Lord in more detail, or is that not needed? Thoughts below as always, or dive over to our Discord to chat with other Star Wars fans.
