With recent reports that James Gunn is going to be overseeing the renovation of the DCEU, just how will it really all work? Honestly, the DCEU seems to be in a better place on a per-film basis than it was, though nowhere near what a Marvel films deliver on average in my humble opinion. Yet, as a connective universe like the MCU, it is in an awful state quite frankly.
We still have Wonder Woman and Aquaman progressing as if Justice League and BvS were canon, though admittedly with very few meaningful references, we also have Shazam! which does appear to be set in that connective world. We also have The Suicide Squad from James Gunn coming and with many of the same actors, it’s going to be a sequel surely, more than a reboot? Then we add in the fact that Henry Cavill seems to have been binned as Superman (sadly) though nothing official, and the reboot of Batman under Matt Reeves who is using Robert Pattinson (petition to use Pattman) to replace Ben Affleck.
Are you confused yet, because I sure am, and now we have this James Gunn rumor to add to the mix? We also know James Gunn has been rehired by Marvel and will once again direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and was also rumored to be helping shape the next ‘cosmic phase’ of the MCU, so I genuinely am bamboozled with all this. So let’s add Dave Bautista into the mix, shall we?

Bautista who plays Drax in the Guardians movies was rumored for a part in The Suicide Squad initially and in the end that part went to John Cena. But fans have been taking to social media to ‘fan cast’ Bautista as the next iteration of Batman villain Bane. You’ll remember bane was last played by Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises. What’s surprising is that Bautista responded to this by simply saying “I accept”, check it out.

So what is really going on, is Gunn moving to head up the DCEU and taking Bautista with him? I have to say as much as I’d miss Gunn form the MCU, they have their cards in a row over there and find great talent consistently, so after Guardians 3 is finished, I would be quite happy to see Gunn try and oversee a reimagining of how to bring the DCEU together. As a comic book fan, I always had more of a soft spot for Marvel, other than Batman himself who was always my favorite superhero, so I would love to see a DCEU that has even a portion of the quality that the MCU has over these last 10 years. Yet, with such a rocky start, changing actors, Superman in limbo, I am really not sure whether it’s even possible to connect all the DCEU together any longer? I hope I’m wrong.
