Dave Filoni Was Initially Against ‘Baby Yoda’ Idea For The Mandalorian

Seems crazy thinking back now, but apparently Dave Filoni was initially against the 'Baby Yoda' idea for The Mandalorian.

Seems crazy thinking back now, but apparently Dave Filoni was initially against the ‘Baby Yoda’ idea for The Mandalorian. I must admit, when I first heard a few rumors about the character, I also wondered at the decision. Yet, Grogu, as we now know his name to be, has become a vital component of the dynamic at play in The Mandalorian.

Here is what Filoni had to say in the most recent Disney Gallery – Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 3, now streaming on Disney+. Transcript from ComicBook.

“You know, like in season one, Jon wants to make a Baby Yoda. I’m like, ‘What? Why? Why would we do this? That sounds like not a good idea,'” Filoni said in the doc.

He added, “But, you put that initial fear aside and you say, ‘Okay, well, let’s really examine this.’ And I was like, ‘Jon, if you’re gonna do this, I’m gonna be there with you. ‘Cause I know Yoda’s one of George’s favorite characters and we cannot mess this up.'”

Yet, I think it would be fair to say ‘Baby Yoda’ worked and the character is almost universally loved by Star Wars fans. Yes, it was a scary idea, and the way the fanbase is, it’s hard to take risks in this franchise now. Yet, when those risks pay off, like Mando S1-2 and Andor, then we get some great content.

The reactions our story above got this weekend were staggering. I get that the Sequel Trilogy was a bit rubbish overall, I didn’t dislike either Rey or Finn though. If anything Finn just needed more to do and perhaps have his awaken in the Force happen earlier. But yeah, all on the writing for me not the characters or the actors.

Of course what will happen is that those who hate the idea of Finn and Rey returning won’t go see it opening weekend. This is something I think Lucasfilm is just going to have to accept. That section of people just won’t be back anytime soon. For me therefore, making a sequel to The Rise of Skywalker is a huge risk, and perhaps not one I would have taken myself, yet. I guess we will just have to wait and see if Boyega agrees to return?

Sometimes, like Baby Yoda, we have to allow these creators to take risks. Yet, at the same time, if you don’t like what they do, why not be vocal about it? I know I am. What do you think of the news that Dave Filoni was initially against the ‘Baby Yoda’ idea for The Mandalorian? Thoughts below, as always.
