David Ayer Confirms That Steppenwolf Was The Original Villain Of Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad went through some massive reshoots and edits from the original vision of director David Ayer. The result was, frankly one of the worst comic book movies I’ve seen in years. We also know that Justice League went through a huge amount of changes from its initial concept through until the dramatic last-minute change from Zack Snyder to Joss Whedon.

It seems that much of the problems from one movie related to the other. David Ayer has posted on Twitter to respond to a fan and confirmed that Suicide Squad was changed dramatically due to planned changes in Justice League. Specifically, in this instance, the main villain was switched out in Suicide Squad so that he could be used in Justice League, who originally must have planned to use Darkseid. Check out Ayer’s post.

So it was originally supposed to connect much more into Justice League with Steppenwolf being a precursor in Suicide Squad for the eventual emergence of Darkseid in Justice League, that’s certainly how it all appears. As it eventually played out, it would be fair to say that Suicide Squad suffered from weak villains, (though amongst other things). Equally, if anything Justice League made Steppenwolf seem like a walk in the park for a rejuvenated Superman. I can’t imagine Darkseid would have proved so easy.

The question remains whether this was a good idea or not, I have to say it seems to this writer like they should have stuck to the original plan. Suicide Squad made very good money despite being a very poor film (IMO), but Justice League was an outright flop and it seems that all the meddling in that movie turned the audience away big time.

What do you think of the original plan, would Suicide Squad and Justice League have both been better movies with their original premise intact? Sound off in the usual place below.
