David Ayer Defends The Comic Accuracy Of Leto’s Joker

DC’s Clown Prince of Crime also known as the Joker turned 80 years this year. The arch-nemesis of Batman who was created by the same creators as the Dark Knight has seen a lot of different takes. We can be here for hours and hours talking about different versions of the Joker just in the pages of comic books. Then add on animated and live-action versions of the character. How many Jokers would we have?

To say that the bar to play the Joker is high is an understatement. Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix both won Academy Awards for their take on the comic book character. Others like Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson are fan favorites. Some even consider Mark Hamill, the voice of Joker in Batman: The Animated Series as their absolute version of the character.

Out of all these Jokers mentioned above, which would you say is the most comic accurate Joker? With so many stories featuring various creative teams that include the Joker, would it be even fair to call one “less accurate” than another?

That was one of the many criticisms that Jared Leto’s take on the character in 2016’s Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer. His inclusion in the film was very vague and did not allow for much character development. Also, people were uncomfortable with his tattoos as well as his metal teeth that were part of his iconic smile. Let’s also not forget that the Ayer’s version of the film was butchered to allow a lighter tone and change of direction for the DCEU.

On Twitter Ayer responded to a post that defended Leto’s Joker as comic accurate with side by side comparisons. You can check out the Tweet below!

Since the HBO Max Justice League news a few weeks ago, Ayer and others have been active on social media promoting the idea of his cut of Suicide Squad to be released. In another tweet he had mentioned how Leto’s Joker had been “mistreated”. That his performance had been “ripped out of the movie”. He hopes that one day he will be able to show what he had envisioned for Suicide Squad.

Although not my favorite Joker, I feel he didn’t do enough in the film to be judged accordingly. This could be another carrot that HBO Max could dangle for people to subscribe to their streaming service. We never thought we would get the Snyder Cut, yet here we are. Who’s to say they won’t follow that up with Suicide Squad?
