How difficult would it be to release David Ayer’s Suicide Squad?

There is a children’s book that says, “if you give you a mouse a cookie, he is going to ask for a glass of milk.” The unprecedented move by WarnerMedia to release the Justice League Snyder Cut on HBO Max next year could have opened Pandora’s Box. I say this in the sense that going forward many unsatisfied fans of different franchises are going to be petitioning to get their films or series “fixed”.

Such is the case for Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Almost immediately after the announcement of the Snyder Cut, fans started petitioning for the “Ayer Cut” of his film. This is because back in 2016 we had got a different theatrical version of Suicide Squad after the negative reactions to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. But would that even be possible?

According to the director himself, yes that would be possible. In a Twitter question he was asked if they could show his cut of the film on HBO Max. The reason being that the Suicide Squad version that was released in theaters was not what he wanted to show.

To this Ayer responded that:
“This is a good question. My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The film I made has never been seen.”

By the sound of his Tweet it sounds like Ayer had already completed or was at least close to completing his version of Suicide Squad. By saying that it “got the Edward Scissorhands treatment” he is probably referring to the way it ended up cut. With the Snyder Cut being released next year it would be interesting to see how the DCEU was supposed to play out.

The only conflict that I see with this is that next year James Gunn will be releasing The Suicide Squad and I think it could get a little confusing to have both versions out. With what they are doing with Justice League, what once sounded almost impossible can become a reality. We may be seeing the resurrection of Snyder’s DCEU.
