David Beinstein on Crafting an Anti-Romantic Comedy with Are You Happy Now [Exclusive Interview]

Josh Ruben and Ismenia Mendes in Are You Happy Now by David Beinstein

Anti-romantic comedies are hard to approach. These types of stories come off with dark comedic tones with a lack of romanticism. So it must be carefully approached with the right cast and jokes to make it work. For David Beinstein, he pulled it off in his indie comedy Are You Happy Now.

Here is the official synopsis:

It’s a dark night for Adam, a manchild in his early thirties, as he stuffs a sweatshirt into the tailpipe of his car. He has come to believe that Gina is his entire existence, and now she is gone forever. Are You Happy Now is the story of Adam and Gina as they struggle to find love through marriage, divorce, and chicken.

Adam can’t live without Gina, so when he finally gets the nerve to propose, he’s devastated by her principled refusal. Adam worries that without the permanence of matrimony, Gina won’t stick around. Adam holds a charity job as a waiter for Urban Plough, his brother’s upscale farm-to-table hype fest and is fired when he can’t get Gina to marry him. He takes a job at Just Chicken, a fried chicken restaurant, where he meets Walt who is running it into the ground. Walt is a true weirdo sporting a Fu-Manchu mustache and a bright yellow jumpsuit, he’s constantly tormented by his own brother, just like Adam. The two hit it off and each begins to accidentally inspire the other. Adam finally gets what he wants when Gina decides to marry, but he’s hardly up to the task. He goes all out to be the person she needs, but inadvertently learns he needs to be true to himself. Does true love really mean divorce?
