Hollywood is going back to the well once again. I know it’s not exactly unique in the industry to make a sequel or prequel to a beloved movie from decades ago, but here’s one that I’m sure you never really expected to happen to: Chinatown. Seriously, Chinatown. One of the great film noir classics from the ‘70s is getting a prequel series in the near future — a move that feels like a terrible one…

…Until you hear about who’s involved. First up, we have David Fincher — an amazing filmmaker with a penchant for mystery and suspense, and a solid TV track record that includes Mindhunter. He will be teaming up with Robert Towne, who co-wrote the original film with Roman Polanski (who directed the original movie), to pen a script for a pilot prequel series. This show will be destined for Netflix if it goes through.

In the show, we will see the life of Jake Gittes, the main character in that original film portrayed by Jack Nicholson, who in that film, uncovers a conspiracy that involves L.A. real estate and the city’s water department. I swear, the actual movie is pretty interesting, in spite of how dry the investigation is.

If the prequel gets a series, House of Cards’ Josh Donen will executive produce. There is no word yet on who will direct the series.
