Oscar Isaac Talks About The Trio Of Leads Coming Together In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker…Finally

When we look at the structure of the original Star Wars trilogy, it really set a template which many movies have since decided to copy when it comes to trilogies. First movie, the leads meet and have an adventure, second movie they are split up and have to deal with events on their own, then in the third movie they all come back together and invariably save the day, the galaxy, whatever.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy has thus far decided against this tried and tested formula with the way they have constructed this trilogy, and I think as we get the final part of that trilogy in December’s The Rise of Skywalker, we are perhaps seeing some of the limitations of the new approach. I guess this will be very subjective as movies and especially Star Wars movies always are, but for me, I don’t feel like the three main leads of the trilogy have spent enough time together on screen. Of course, I am talking about Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron. Something that Poe actor Oscar Isaac mentions when he talked with EW recently.

“This time around you get to see the trio together, you know, I think after the spirit of the original trilogy, exploring the dynamic between these three characters that love each other. You feel like they have been together but when you really look at it, wow, they really haven’t spent much time together out of the cockpit.”

Well, yes, this is the issue for me completely. If you count up, or attempt to count how much time Poe and Finn have spent together, I reckon it’s less than a few hours in one another’s company, the majority of that probably being the ending of The Last Jedi. Finn and Rey, well they actually did spend the majority of The Force Awakens with each other, but then Finn doesn’t see Rey from the point he is struck down by Kylo Ren until the end of The Last Jedi. It’s when you look at Poe and Rey that alarm bells start to ring, as Poe and Rey are introduced to one another for the first time at the very end of The Last Jedi.

When we look at the evidence it’s hard to imagine how Rey, Finn and Poe “love each other”, they hardly know anyone yet? I guess that The Rise of Skywalker will sensibly start around a year after the events of The Last Jedi, so there is finally some time for their relationships to have evolved off-screen, something I felt was lacking between TFA and TLJ due to the way TFA ended and how quickly TLJ had to begin.

Are we really going to believe that these three characters are fast friends in The Rise of Skywalker, do they even have a dynamic between them as a trio? The fault for this may well lie with J.J. Abrams initially for intending to kill off Poe Dameron in that Tie Fighter crash with Finn, only to bring him back because he reportedly tested well with audiences. But even then, surely Rian Johnson had a responsibility to place at least two of these characters together in The Last Jedi and yet all three were separated. Poe could have had an adventure with Finn, or even went looking for Rey and got to meet her, I’m not going to rewrite the movie, but I think you get the idea.

I guess we shall find out how successful this approach was when The Rise of Skywalker hits in exactly one month’s time from now. And if you want to hear editor in chief Joseph ‘Jammer’ Medina and myself going at it over The Last Jedi ( I think it’s awful and he loves it), then watch out for The Last Call Podcast to go live on the 21st — that’s this Thursday, folks. Kyle Malone will be trying to rein us in across a special podcast so large we had to split it into two parts, but then this has been a long time coming.

Let us know what you think of Isaac’s comments and whether you agree or disagree with my assessment in the usual place below.
