DC Announces Punchline #1 One-Shot For November

Well with Harley Quinn having moved on from the Joker and make her own life, it’s only fair that he would do the same. If you have been following The Joker War, in the current pages of Batman by James Tynion IV, you’ve probably met Punchline. As Joker’s new right-hand woman she has quickly established herself as one of this year’s breakout comic book characters. So much that her first appearance created quite a stir on social media. Was is Batman #89 or was it Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3. Some people just had to know to make sure they bought just that one book!

Punchline has certainly left her mark in the DC Universe just ask Harley Quinn, Lucious Fox, or Batman. But will she be a one and done character in Batman? Absolutely not. Today DC announced a new special one-shot 48-page comic book titled Punchline #1. This is currently scheduled to be released on November 10th.

It will be written by Tynion and Sam Johns. It will contain artwork by Mirka Andolfo with the main cover by Yasmine Putri and a variant by Frank Cho. The press release states that “Facing the consequences of her role in “The Joker War,” Punchline is the story of Alexis Kaye, and how she’ll take Leslie Thompkins, Harper Row and Cullen Row on a harrowing journey that reveals her radicalization to The Joker’s ideology.

Both Tynion and Johns made comments about the title.

“Back when I first introduced Punchline, I said many times that this wasn’t going to be a flash in the pan character. That I had big plans for her moving forward, that would drive big story next year and beyond,” says Tynion IV. “Joker War is over, but Punchline’s plans have only just begun. I’m thrilled to be telling this frightening story that expands her past, and sets up her future, with the amazing Sam Johns, and the incredible Mirka Andolfo. This is only the beginning!”

“Fans immediately responded to Punchline,” says Johns, “so I’m thrilled to be part of the team that gets to build the foundation of this deadly cult icon. Working with such a talented artist as Mirka means we didn’t have to hold back on any of the action, horror, or romance…And when it comes to Punchline and Joker, you often need to pull off all three at once!”

In an earlier The Comic Source Podcast episode, I did mention that I wasn’t sold yet on Punchline. I wasn’t sure how much to invest in a character that could just easily be put on a shelf. We’ll see what kind of plans Tynion has for her going forward post Joker War. I hope that next weekend at the DC FanDome event we get more details about the character and her one-shot title.
