C0-DC Studios boss Peter Safran said in a recent interview that we should expect a decision on Lanterns Season 2 by the end of the year. Lanterns Season 1 whether you loved it like me or loathed it was popular in terms of watch numbers. HBO’s most successful new series in some time.
So fans have been wondering with the viewing figures already in, why has Season 2 not been greenlit?
As per Collider,
‘Ahead of Clayface‘s premiere, DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran told Collider’s Steve Weintraub that fans should hear about a potential Lanterns Season 2 “before the end of the year.” That gives viewers a window for news, although Safran did not announce a renewal. He also confirmed that the work happening in the Season 2 writers’ room will help determine whether the series moves forward. Asked what he took away from the first season and its reception, Safran pointed to what the show had accomplished for Green Lantern following the character’s 2011 movie. He described the series as a success in bringing the property back into the public conversation. For him, that was the most rewarding part of its first season:’
“This was one great season of television based on a property that had been somewhat irradiated since 2011, right? The thing that’s most gratifying about this show and this season on HBO is that it’s brought Green Lantern back into the conversation, into the public culture in a really positive fashion.”

‘Safran’s enthusiasm for the first season comes with a clear requirement for the next one. DC wants a follow-up that can meet the standard he believes the show has already set. As he explained: “If we’re able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that’s what’s going to dictate whether there’s a second season.”’
Safran later answered simply “yes” when asked if Season 2 is dependant on the writers room coming up with a worthy idea. He refused to be drawn on what a Season 2 could mean for the story as it was left in Season 1.
TLDR,
Lanterns was a success and DC Studios are willing to greenlight a Season 2 if the writers currently working on it can come up with an idea they feel is worth greenlighting. This isn’t really much different from any series, especially when it was not planned as a multi-season arc.
I should also point out this; there is no reason to assume that if DC Studios reject the Season 2 idea that a second series is dead. The studio always has the opportunity to say thanks to Chris Mundy, but we’re going to solicit pitches by other creatives. I’m not saying they will do that or that Mundy’s team would not get the opportunity to try again, my point is merely that this option exists for the studio.
If it were me in Safran’s boots, I would want Chandler back, even if only as the Halogram. Also easily explained by John having abilities other Lanterns don’t and having an unsanctioned power source. I’d definitely need more convincing for a Season 2 with no Chandler at all.
I guess we will find out, probably through the trades eventually. I hope Mundy and his team knock it out the park, with maybe even some idea of a multi-season arc and and end game?
