DC Developing Blue Beetle Film With Latino Lead

A few years back, we reported on news that Greg Berlanti, the guy behind all those DC TV shows on the CW, was working hard at a Blue Beetle and Booster Gold buddy film. It’s been a good long while since we’ve had an update on that, and like most projects that sort of peter out of the news, I had assumed that project was pretty much dead.

It looks like I was right, because if we’re to believe a new report from TheWrap, the folks over at DC and Warner Bros. are hard at work developing a completely different incarnation of Blue Beetle. More specifically, they will be working on a version of the superhero that was introduced back in 2006 in Infinite Crisis #3. That’s right, we’re talking about the Latino Jaime Reyes.

Set to write the script is Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, a Mexican-born writer who penned a draft of Antoine Fuqua’s Scarface, which, last we heard, should have hit production this past October — though there’s been no update on it for a while. But that’s beside the point. The point is this will be the first Latino superhero to lead his own film. In the past, we’ve had Jay Hernandez play El Diablo in Suicide Squad and very soon we’ll be getting Renee Montoya in Birds of Prey, but in terms of leading, this is a first, which is pretty cool.

While I’m familiar with the previous iterations of the character, I don’t really know a lot about this take, but here’s what the outlet has to say about the character:

“Jaime Reyes discovered the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school with two of his best friends Paco and Brenda, half-buried in a disused lot. Reyes took the scarab home, curious as to what it might be. That night, the scarab came alive, and grafted itself to the base of Jaime’s spine, and provided him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor which can be modified to enhance his speed and strength, as well as to create weapons, wings and shields.”
