We know that director J.J. Abrams has signed up to a mega deal with WB, and one imagines now that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is almost upon us, Abrams will be thinking about what he does next for his new studio.
We may have a very vague hint of what that could be thanks to Variety‘s Justin Kroll, who was on Bartsool‘s My Mom’s Basement podcast recently. Kroll said the following with regards to Abrams.
“I hope the new Warner Bros. deal leads to more stuff, maybe someone with a cape. We’ll see. That’s a hint.”
Now, you can imagine that fans immediately starting shouting SUPERMAN because, you know, he’s the only one who wears a cape apparently. However, with the way things are going at WB, Superman seems to be way below even Supergirl on the list and I’m pretty sure she qualifies as wearing a cape also. Realistically it makes sense that WB would want Abrams on a DC property, because it’s one of their biggest and yet least well managed IP’s for me.
Now, I’m not Abrams biggest fan, so I just have a vision in my head of Abrams picking something where he can copy the original, but there’s not much I can think of when it comes to superheroes he could dip into that well for. You could say Superman 78, but that would require a complete reboot for Kal’ El and I’m not sure how well that would work in the modern day landscape of comic book movies.

I do want to see a new Superman movie, but who would be best to take that forward I am not sure about? It’s definitely a tricky hero to get right on the big screen. However, WB may be looking at Abrams record of mixing box office returns with sprinklings of nostalgia and thinking he’s the man to give the second biggest character in their locker to? Let’s be clear though. At no point does Kroll mention the word Superman here, even if it feels like the right call, so your guess is as good as mine? It’s likely that there is something in this though, as Kroll is notoriously well-connected and usually one for breaking big stories early. I’m guessing we won’t hear much official until after Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker is firmly making money in cinemas this Winter.
