Visionnaries: Featuring Jorge Jimenez to focus on artist’s journey to becoming one of DC’s most popular illustrators
Rumors of the demise of Warner Brothers’ DC Universe streaming surface are going strong currently. The recent cancellation of DC Daily, the flagship news show on the service, which served up reviews, interviews and teasers for upcoming DC comics as well as TV and Film talk, has only exacerbated this speculation.
However, all is not lost for fans of DC comics and their creators. Amidst this upheaval DC has announced that we will have at least one episode of a documentary style show focused on the beginnings of one of their hot, current creators. Jorge Jimenez. Jimenez is the current artist on Batman, with James Tynion IV handling the writing chores. The documentary, titled Visionnaries: Featuring Jorge Jimenez, is set to debut Saturday, June 20th at 1 PM Pacific.
Before handling the duties on the Caped Crusader, Jimenez had a long run on Justice League, working with both Tynion IV and DC writing powerhouse Scott Snyder. Some later issues of the Justice League run even had Jimenez receiving plotting credit, a sign that this passionate creator can do more than just bring a script to life. He seems to want to help craft the narrative before he even puts pencil to paper, or stylus to screen to be more accurate.
I had the pleasure of meeting Jorge Jimenez at San Diego Comic Con in 2016. I can say whole heartedly that this man loves comics, especially DC Comics. His love of the characters, medium, fans and industry were so self-evident that you understood where the excitement in his art comes from. I don’t think I ever saw him without a smile over the four days of the convention.
This peek behind the scenes into the origins of a popular creator is just the sort of thing that can connect with fans and help them feel invested in an artist or writer and give a boost to their work in terms of sales. Anything the comic industry, heavily impacted by the current Covid-19 global pandemic, can do to help readers feel invested is a step in the right direction and hopefully we will see more of this type of coverage in the future.
Will it be on the DC Universe streaming app? Will DCU be folded into the new HBO Max service from WB that is home to so much of the content in the Warner Media family? Only time will tell but be sure to keep up with LRM’s coverage of what might happen next.
Meanwhile, be sure to watch as the documentary shows the early struggles of Jimenez as a young artist from a small, remote village in Spain, striving to fulfill his dream of drawing some of the most well-known DC Superheroes. Inspired by his desire to illustrate his childhood hero Superman, the artistic process and journey of Jorge Jimenez will surely be worth watching.
