Nia DaCosta, Candyman’s newest director, has tied the film to the recent Black Lives Matter movement.
Inspired by recent events, she tied the origins of ‘Candyman’ to the white violence on black people in the past.
She wrote, “Candyman, at the intersection of white violence and black pain, is about unwilling martyrs. The people they were, the symbols we turn them into, the monsters we are told they must have been.”
By using shadow puppets animation, the teaser trailer showed the mob violence and police atrocities of the past on African-Americans. The final shot of the trailer indicates how Candyman got his hook for a hand.
Two recognizable vignettes played out were the real-life lynchings of James Byrd Jr. in 1998 and the execution of 14-year-old George Stinney Jr. in 1944. There’s a portrayal of a painter creating portraits of black victims after they’ve been murder from white violence.
Candyman stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Kyle Kaminsky, and Vanessa Williams. DaCosta directed the film from the screenplay by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and DaCosta. It is based on the 1992’s Candyman by Bernard Rose and characters created by Clive Barker.
This new Candyman is a spiritual sequel to the 1992 Candyman film. The spirit returned to the gentrified neighborhood of Chicago, where the legend began.
