Much ink has been spilled regarding the Suicide Squad spinoff film, Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. From Hollywood pundits, to blogs, to Twitter users, everyone has something to say about why they think the critically well-received film hasn’t been able to turn that reception into box office bank. It has been compared to everything from Sonic the Hedgehog to Joker to Deadpool. It’s fitting then, that Deadpool creator, Rob Liefeld weighed in on the flick himself.
In a now-deleted tweet, Liefeld attached images of Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey, comparing her in her yellow outfit to Ronald McDonald along with the comments:
“Next time, more punk rock, less happy meal,” and “The Ronald McDonald look on Harley, not so much. Stick with the winning punk rock formula. Visual design and costuming matter.”
The outfit in question can be seen below.
Liefeld then followed up the tweet with an image of Blonde’s Deborah Harry alongside Harley Quinn’s from Suicide Squad and said the following:
“Anyways, Suicide Squad costume designer Kate Hawley drew inspiration from Blondie’s Deborah Harry for Harley Quinn. Punk Rock suits her.”
Since the tweet with the images were deleted, you can check the comparison from another user down below who also noticed the similarities.
I wonder if the inspiration for the Harley Quinn character was Debbie Harry from Blondie? #SundayMorning pic.twitter.com/Ki6uztY0pZ

Liefeld’s tweets were met with anger from fans across the internet. Many upset with Liefeld pointed to his own artwork, implying that he seemed to be more disappointed that Harley Quinn wasn’t dressed as provocatively as she was in Suicide Squad (2016).

But is that what Liefeld actually meant?
In a wide-ranging interview with LRM Online, Liefeld sought to clarify his controversial comments, saying it had more to do with the look of the movie as a whole. He expressed regret for the lack of context he gave in the tweet.
“I regret what I did not say and I should have been more blunt. [Birds of Prey] looks like a bad Joel Schumacher continuation of the aesthetic from Batman and Robin (1998). That’s what it looks like to my eyes. I don’t think the Joel Schumacher aesthetic is one that I would pursue in a movie right now.”
Liefeld goes on to describe his problems with everything from the marketing to the posters to the colors of the film and how they turned him off from the movie. He cannot comment on the quality of the film because due to his perspective on the marketing, he wasn’t interested in seeing it.
You can hear the rest of the interview with Rob Liefeld when it drops Monday, 24 February on Breaking Geek Radio: The Podcast.
What about you? Do you think the look of the film harkens back to the “Schumacher Aesthetic?”
