This week we also learned that Swamp Thing is being developed as a rated R series with lots of graphic violence and adult themes as well as their Alan Moore inspiration. Today, Splash Report broke the news that Derek Mears has been cast to play Swamp Thing. It is important to note that he has been cast only as the creature not as Dr. Alec Holland. Mears is best known for his role as Jason Voorhees in the reboot of Friday the 13th. He has also appeared in Sleepy Hollow, Men in Black II and Agents of Shield.

Swamp Thing is based on the DC Comics character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The series is being written by the writer of Ash Vs. Evid Dead Mark Verheiden and IT co-writer Gary Dauberman. Both are also executive producing with Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Michael Clear, with Rob Hackett as co-producer.

Here is the synopsis for the series:
“Swamp Thing” centers on CDC researcher Abby Arcane. When she returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.
