Despite What You’ve Heard, The Reports Of Jamie Foxx Leaving Spawn Are Greatly Exaggerated

No worries, Spawn fans. Jamie Foxx isn’t going anywhere.

During an interview with Shoryuken, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane shocked the fanbase with his choice of words. McFarlane uttered the following:

“Last week I got some discouraging news, we had an Academy Award-winning guy who was going to do the movie with us, but he fell off. We had people willing to fund the movie as long as we had this guy attached but schedules were conflicting, and things had to change. That’s how close we are to getting this thing off the ground.”

Understandably, the fanbase went into a panic. Losing Foxx would definitely put a halt on production and most likely end the hopes of another Spawn film. Thankfully, the “Academy Award-winning guy” McFarlane referred to is not Foxx, but an unnamed writer. Comicbook has confirmed that Foxx is still very much attached to the project.

Since 2013, Foxx has been vocal about his desire to play Al Simmons/Spawn on screen. The McFarlane comic book creation hasn’t seen the silver screen since the 1997 live-action adaptation, starring Michael Jai White (The Dark KnightArrow) and John Leguizamo (Netflix’s When They See UsMoulin Rouge). Just last month, McFarlane shared an update regarding the production of the film:

“Everybody in Hollywood wants an R-rated, dark comic book movie, and Spawn is at the top of their list. The phone calls are coming in fast and rapid. I’ve been talking to a couple of Academy Award people, I’ve got the investors getting lined up. It’s changed ever since the Joker from being me begging them to do Spawn dark and creepy, to them asking… So I’m telling you it will happen this year. This year. And I will direct it. I will be directing it.”

While losing any award-winning talent on a project is disappointing, Foxx remaining onboard keeps hope alive for this much-needed reboot of an iconic character. Here’s hoping McFarlane and company can make it happen soon.
