Detective Pikachu Director Teases Authentic-Looking Live-Action Pokémon, Namedrops Rocket Raccoon For Comparison

For better or worse, the upcoming Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will give us an actual understanding of what Pokémon will look in our real world. We’ve lived more than two decades with all these monsters in our lives, and despite all that, have no real idea of what it would be like if a Pikachu really were to hop on by. What would that look like?

The closest thing we’ve gotten since then has come in the form of Pokémon Go, where we see these creatures standing around in our real world, but I think it goes without saying that that isn’t at all what life would REALLY be like if these creatures ran around in the real world. No, sadly, Pikachu would not be silly and cartoony, Pidgeys would just be normal birds, and Rhyhorns would be creatures you just wouldn’t want to mess with.

It sounds like this is kinda what they’re going for in the first live-action film, as teased by director Rob Letterman at the Pokémon World Championships last week:

“They’re incredibly real, you should think of it as the way [Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy character] Rocket Raccoon sits in the movie as if he’s really there. It’s that technology. The same group of people that worked on that, or worked on Jungle Book. We’ve got the people on it that worked on Fantastic Beasts. They’re technically, some of the most high-end visual effects in the world,” Letterman said. “It’s completely photorealistic, like they are alive and in the movie. I will say that it’s exactly how I wanted to see the Pokemon portrayed when I was a little kid.”

I am both excited and terrified. Is this the way I really want to see all these creatures realized? As a film lover, I would greatly appreciate these live-action people interacting with something more realistic, á la The Jungle Book, but a part of me does worry that something will get lost in translation. We’ll just have to wait and see.
