Today’s rumor concerns The Batman, the upcoming Batman solo movie from director Matt Reeves. For once this rumor has nothing to do with whether Ben Affleck will appear as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the movie, so that’s a change. (On that front we here at LRM still don’t think you’ll see Affleck in the suit again).

Today’s rumor instead focuses on another potential piece of casting for The Batman. According to sources at Omega Underground, WB has met with Star Wars star Oscar Isaac for an unknown role in the movie. The outlet goes on to speculate this could be the role of the main villain in the movie (I agree if true). There are rumblings that WB is looking for an A-list actor to portray the villain in this movie and Isaac certainly now fits that bill. It is said that Isaac has not been offered the role yet, but has taken meetings with WB about the role.

Whom might Isaac be playing? Well, now we have to get into some speculation games, so here is what we have heard.

Apparently, WB is looking at both Penguin and Black Mask, but the wrinkle here is that we don’t know exactly which villain they are scouting for The Batman and which they are penciling into the Birds of Prey movie currently in development.

Personally, I think there is an argument for either option here and I would not like to pin my sails to either mast at this time. If I had to take a guess, and if you follow my work, you know i will, then I’d guess Black Mask for The Batman.

I have already heard a few fans declare how great Isaac would be as The Penguin, but I am not sure I agree, whereas Black Mask, this I could see? Black Mask is a villain who feels like a shadowy reflection of Bruce Wayne. Roman Sionis shares a very similar background to Wayne, although in an almost mirrored fashion. i.e. Sionis killed his parents at a young age after mistreatment caused a deep anger in him and many other dark reflections of Bruce. Sionis hatred is less for Batman and more aimed at Wayne himself.

With rumors that The Batman will go back to the origins of the Dark Knight, for me Black Mask fits in nicely. I’d also mention that Penguin has been rumored as the top villain choice for Birds of Prey for some time also. However, it’s all fairly vague at this point and I would not be surprised at all to find out things are the other way.

I know how much you guys love these rumor stories, but I think we have to write about what we here whether it pans out or not. The decision about how much stock you put in that rumor is up to you, though we always try to give you some context to make that judgment.
