The marketing for the upcoming Pokémon: Detective Pikachu has continued to impress me quite a bit. While the monsters themselves look pretty rough in terms of their overall CG look (they look kinda rushed, in my opinion), they still manage to look kind of cool in a way that blends in pretty well with the bright world around them — and that’s a pretty big plus.

Another thing that seems to work in their favor is Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu. Yes, it’s definitely hard not to imagine Deadpool talking, but there’s something to be said about the charm he brings to a character who normally only says his name. In this new TV spot, we get a few more funny moments shared between him and the main character, played by Justice Smith.

One hilarious moment is him supposedly talking French only to say “caliente fiesta” — a phrase that’s clearly not French. Perhaps the highlight for me is at the end when he’s grilling Mr. Mime, telling him to “Just say it!” Honestly, this may just be falling in with my sense of humor, but I find fewer things funnier than characters being unnecessarily loud or aggressive, and how cute Pikachu juxtaposes against that very well.

I continue to be excited for this movie, but what about you? You’re likely a lot less invested in this world than I am, so what are your thoughts? Let us know your thoughts down below!
