Detective Pikachu Has Record Opening And Will Likely Become Biggest Grossing Video Game Adaptation

This writer went and saw Detective Pikachu last evening and found it to be an adorable film filled with nostalgia that more than makes up for its simple and predictable plot. There is no doubt that the Pokémon brand has power across a large group of ages. Those of us young enough to have been in grade or middle school when the first games, anime, and card game hit have kids of our own that are likely into the games, cards, and anime. This translates into money at the box office.

The movie, which stars Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith, pulled in an estimated $58 million making it the largest opening weekend gross for a video game movie ever. This puts the $131.1 million total domestic haul for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider well within reach for Pikachu and company to become the highest grossing video game movie ever. The film already has a foreign total of $112 million bringing it’s worldwide total to $170 million. This is all against a budget of $150 million.
