If you already thought Ryan Reynolds was adorable, get ready to witness him go full electric rat in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (rats are cute…right?). In the film, he will be playing none other than Pikachu — a wisecracking, short-fused sleuth with the cutest, furriest face known to man.
The recently-released trailer already exceeded expectations for most of us here at the LRM Online offices. Not only did it manage to give us intriguing live-action interpretations of our favorite monsters, but it also brought with it an unexpectedly dark and grimy aesthetic (or as dark and grimy as a fun, family film would allow). Furthermore, it birthed many an artistic interpretation of Pikachu as Deadpool, which I still can’t get out of my head.

As you can see, the image shows off Reynolds featuring the trademark dots that come with any piece of performance capture. If you’re new to the game, these are then used to help give the digital counterpart realistic facial expressions that help give the animated character that much more believability. Obviously, the image shown here doesn’t exactly show off the range of emotion, but it’s a cool little baseline. Plus it gives us our closest look yet at Pikachu himself.
Man, that thing looks adorable.
